How Cosmetic Dentists Improve Your Smile

Damaged Teeth

Your cosmetic dentist has a broad range of tools dedicated to improving the appearance of your smile. These same tools can also play a central role in improving your oral health. The tools they use to reform the shape and size of your teeth can improve imperfections as part of combined restorative/cosmetic care. Cosmetic dentists can address teeth that are crooked, misshapen, or small. The results can be simple, addressing minor aesthetic concerns and oral health issues to a total make-over.

How Damaged or Misshapen Teeth Impact Your Oral Health

When someone has a tooth that is misshapen or damaged, one of their primary concerns can be their appearance. However, there are greater implications to these teeth than merely cosmetic concerns. Each of our teeth is part of an integrated system in our oral cavity. Gum, tooth, and tissue health are all closely intertwined. A tooth that is damaged or misshapen may not be providing sufficient support to its neighboring teeth. This can lead to these teeth shifting out of position or otherwise coming out of alignment.

Even if the patient’s primary goal is to improve the appearance of their smile, they may not be able to start with cosmetic care. The tooth itself must be able to support the treatment it will undergo, or it could end up doing more harm than good. The proper first step in cases like this is tending to the restoration and strengthening of the tooth.

Some cosmetic treatments used to improve the size and structure of the tooth include:

  • Dental Bonding – This process involves using a composite bonding material that can easily and effectively restore a natural-appearing shape to the tooth. It can be tinted to match the tooth’s color and shaped so that it matches the appearance of its neighbors. Once the material is properly cured (often with a curing light), it will be resilient enough to last for years.
  • Dental Veneers – This treatment removes a small layer of enamel replaced with a beautifully sculpted prosthesis known as a veneer. This thin layer of porcelain can hide the appearance of dental imperfections. These include minor misalignments, discoloration, and small gaps.
  • Dental Implants – Dental implants are an excellent solution when a patient has lost one or more teeth. They’re the Cadillac of dental restorations and can seamlessly restore form and function, even for patients who have lost all their teeth.
